Tribute Regional 2 South West
Chard will be very disappointed to have lost this local derby but in truth they were really architects of their own downfall with an error strewn performance in a game which they had gone into with high hopes.
Chard were guilty of giving far too many penalties away right from the kick off and with ten minutes gone they paid the price when the home side kicked to the corner, won the resulting lineout and drove over for the opening try which was well converted from the touch line. 7-0
Chard then had a good spell and some nice work down the right from Joe Mainwaring ended with Huw Edwards scoring an unconverted try in the corner. 7-5
Having lost the toss Chard were playing down the slope and with the slight breeze in the opening half so it was important to make the most of it and this they did with an inspired break from fly half Oscar Anderson who crossed for their 2nd try which was converted by Emile Szydelko. 7-12
Chard were continually being penalized for a variety of offences including several high tackles and indeed one player (the wrong player as it happens) was sent to the bin as a consequence even though he was clearly not the guilty party!! Again, the home side made the most of the penalty to score an unconverted try to bring the scores level at 12pts apiece at the interval. The first half had been a scrappy and disjointed affair during which 15 penalties had been given of which 14 were against Chard! Chard had though showed their ability and played well in patches with Jason Wright, Jack Eliot and Dougie Herbert to the fore.
Chard effectively lost the game in the opening minutes of the 2nd half when they conceded two converted tries. Under no real pressure a Chard clearance kick to touch from inside the 22 missed its target and the quick thinking home backs made the l most of it and scored a well worked try from the counter attack. 19-12 This was soon followed by a 4th bonus point try. 26-19. Chards afternoon then went from bad to worse as one players was sent to the bin, another received a red card and Petherton added a very dubious 5th try.
Incredibly Chard had a bit of a purple patch in the last ten minutes and scored an unconverted try from Ross Colenso and really should have added a fourth bonus point try themselves but somehow Petherton kept them out.
Despite this being a bad day at the office for the team Herbert continues to shine at number 9, the pack were dominant for long periods and the defensive tackling by all was good. It is quite obvious to everyone that Chard have to show more discipline, reduce the penalty count dramatically and concentrate on the basics which as a good side they are certainly capable of.
They will be looking to do so and bounce back with a win when they entertain local rivals Sherborne under lights at home on Friday Evening( 21st October )with the game kicking off at 7 30pm.
