Martock v Chard 2nd XV - Written by Gav Smillie
Chard's Wing Commanders traveled to Martock on Saturday playing a catch up game originally scheduled in November, on paper it should have been a comfortable game for Chard but being a free weekend for most clubs weekend teams can look very different from the norm, Martock looked like a barbarian team with lots of different club socks on display.
Chard took an early lead via Dave Lock who took the ball out wide and sprinted in to take first blood, the wind made kicking a challenge and Lock failed to convert, less than two minutes later Hamish McDermott sniped through the middle scoring for the home club and made easy work of the simple kick to put the hosts ahead 7-5.
The following 10 minutes of play involved players running into each other with no real advantage to each side before on 18 minutes Jamie Prior scored for Chard with an unconverted try before the game of 'run into the big blokes' started again keeping the crowd bemused until Gav Watts, who was having one of his best games increased Chards lead to 7-15 going into half time.
The second half continued with lots of action at close quarters until Martock managed to get the ball out wide only to have Dave Lock almost intercept leading to his departure from the field of play for ten minutes giving Martock a number advantage that they took advantage of scoring soon after 12-15 and then soon after to take the lead once more 19-15.
Chards veteran full back Ben Stead got the visitors back in the lead with another unconverted try 19-20 with 6 minutes to go surely they could grind out a win........... no! Martock came back strong and with just 3 minutes left got a converted try to go two scores ahead 26-20 leaving Chard the unlikely chance of getting any more than a losing bonus, but that man Stead weaved through the defence to dot down with seconds left on the clock 26-25 giving Lock the chance to redeem himself and with ease he slotted the conversion to give Chard the win 26-27 with a bonus point win.
