Chard RFC

73 - 7

(HT 0-0)

Martock RFC

By Gavin Smillie

Chard 2nd XV welcomed Martock to Essex Close two weeks after they played a thriller against each other ending in a one point win for Chard with the last kick of the match and a large crowd turned up hoping to see another hard fought contest.

Martock had the wind against them in the first half and struggled to get out of their own half from the start and Chard capitalised when Ross Fanyinka opened up his account for the day on five minutes with an unconverted try.
From the restart Chard pressured and it wasn't long before Kieran Smillie and Billy Vernon had an overlap on they left wing and Vernon dotted down, Sam Mouland getting the extras giving Chard a 12-0 lead for all of a minute where Fin Shoemark gathered from the restart and ran in to make it 17-0 with his15th try of the season.
Fanyinka soon got his second of the game on 15 minutes again a run in from the kick off as Martock although good with the ball in hand were getting few opportunities to show what they could do and away team frustrations were not helped when Fanyinka got his hattrick with just 20 minutes played 27-0 at this point Martocks influential number 8 left the field presumably due to injury.
Martock had a brief period of play in the opposition half forcing a penalty that was kicked for an attacking lineout  on the Chard five meter, unfortunately for the visitors Chard were a match and Chard broke again and were soon pressuring Martocks line and Scott Johnson finished the move with Chards sixth try with Prop Dan Goetz calmly drop kicking the conversion 34-0.
Dylon Moss was the next to get on the score sheet with both a try and conversion 41 -0 then with only minutes remaining in the first half Chard dominated once again and Lewis Hole went over and Moss finished the half with a successful conversion
Half Time 48-0
With the wind still playing a major factor in the game Martock found it easier to clear their lines and Chard found it more difficult to play phases so it took Ben Stead 15 minutes to get the scoring going again closely followed Vernon with his second of the day 58-0
Martock were still trying hard and nobody could accuse them of giving in and eventually they were awarded with a try under the posts converted to get them off the mark 58-7 before Johnson, Mouland and Stead each added a second try to their taily to bring the score to 73-7
Chard had put together a good performance with solid work from all over the pitch and although it could have been anyone of the players the coaches recognised Will vinings workrate and awarded him Man of the match
Full time 73--7
