Wells II 0 - 17 Chard II
By Gavin Smillie
Chard's 2nd XV traveled to Wells with a slightly depleted squad with a number of players filling gaps in the 1st team due to unavailability but with the return of Nick Hyslop, Kieran Smillie and Sam Duke to the team Wells would have been none the wiser.
Anyone that has been to wells will know that the pitch has a slope like no other and and Chard had the task of of climbing in the first half, with a solid defence and some fantastic go forward Chard pinned the home team in their own half for the majority of the time but failed to get over the line the closest they came was when prop forward Hyslop chipped and someone chased but 0-0 it was at the break.
With a positive halftime team talk, Chard where under no doubt how the game needed winning and an extra effort was needed to break down a commendable Wells defence, a number of players came close including Billy Vernon and Dave Lock but it was a Ruben Usher who broke the line and went over for his debut senior try. 0-5.
Soon after Finn Shoemark went on one of his weaving runs pushing his tally to 15 for the season for the Wing Commanders leading the league by a good margin, (Chard IIs have 5 players in the top 10 try scorers so far this season) 0-10.
With a doment scrum marching forward a dot down at the base was a gift for Dave Tucker who deserved to get on the scoreboard for bossing the game from the scrum half position ensuring clean ball for Chard to play good expansive Rugby. Dylan Moss stepped up to take the kick to finish the game 0-17.
