Chard RFC
Burnham-on-Sea II 5-64 Chard II
By Gavin Smillie

Chard traveled to struggling Burnham on Saturday looking to maintain their place at the top of Tribute Somerset 2 South.

With late changes  to the team Chard shuffled their starting 15 giving Dave Tucker a chance to shine at scrum half and Reuben Usher making his first start in the tight head position.
Chard started well and it took just 5 minutes to settle in with Tom Spurway going in under the posts and Sam Mouland
Kick the extras. (Please note Sam no mention of your early penalty kick)
With the first score under their belt Chard could have built on their lead but poor discipline  made it harder then necessary being marched back on two occasions and with Burnham being gifted attacking positions in the Chard 22 they couldn’t help but go over the line eventually with Chard also loosing the services of Warren Lewis as he was shown a red card.
When Chard started playing rugby again tries started to flow and they put 5 past the opposition before half time despite being a player short, with the better Lewis, Lock, Tucker and two from Mouland all getting on the score sheet.
The only change at half time was John Cottey on for Triston Wooton in the second row and it wasn’t long before Chard were scoring again with Fin Shoemark and Mouland in free flow and Jamie Prior and Billy Vernon also getting on the score sheet.
Burnham decided that as enough time had been played for the result to stand  an early shower was required and the ref blew the whistle to bring the game to a close.
Chards man of the match could have been one of many with Shoemark, Wooton and Smillie standing out but Usher was a cut above and deserved the award.
