After two good wins against Paignton and Penryn Chard suffered a big loss against Teignmouth on Saturday and director of rugby Jon Hendy commented that on the day the hosts were by far the better side and thoroughly deserved their victory.
Chard had travelled with a squad that showed several changes from last weeks game and they started the game well enough.
Teignmouth went ahead with a penalty but this was soon cancelled out when Niall Crouch was on target with a similar effort Sadly this would be the only time Chard would trouble the scoreboard operator!
Teignmouth had some fast running backs and they were given far too much room by Chard who had a poor day defensively. As a result the hosts always seemed to have the extra man and were able to carve their way through into scoring positions far too often.
It wasn’t all bad news though because despite the heavy loss several Chard players came out of the game with credit . David Morton had a terrific game in the front row and Dean Richards played particularly well in the back row. Joel Nicholls had a rare opportunity to play a full game as hooker and he did well for the team.
There are no poor teams in this division and if too many players start missing tackles you can soon be in trouble and this was certainly the case for Chard this time out.
Having said this of course it should not be forgotten that Chard have had a very good season to date and are a far better team than this result might indicate!
A bad day at the office but we move on!
Chard have two games left to play and they will be playing their final match at home when they entertain Tiverton on Saturday with the game kicking off at 3pm.
There is a sponsors day at the club on Saturday and it can not be emphasised enough how grateful the club are to all the local businesses and individuals who sponsor the club in so many different ways. They are a vital part of the club so many thanks to all.
