CHARD RUGBY REPORT FOR SATURDAY 26th MARCH 2022

CHARD 36pts PENRYN 19pts

from

Glyn Hughes

Chard scored six tries in this comfortable win against  very enthusiastic Cornish opponents who gave a very spirited performance throughout.

Penryn scored two late tries to make the final score a bit closer than it probably should have been but these scores fully reflected the never say die attitude  of the visitors .

Chard started the game very strongly and spurned several kickable penalties in order to go for bigger things but a few unforced errors meant that Penryn survived this early onslaught.

The Chard forwards were dominant from the off and eventually after ten minutes play their outstanding hooker Ben Robinson forced his way over for an unconverted  try wide out on the right.

5-0

However within minutes Penryn got into the Chard 22 area and looked very sharp when they took a quick tap penalty and centre  Andrew Seviour crossed for a try which fly half George Edson converted.

5-7

Penryn could have increased their lead with a straight forward penalty but Edson pulled the kick wide.

Scrum half Ross Colenso then made a lovely run to carve his way through the visitors  defence  for Chards second try which although again unconverted put his team back in front

10-7

This would be the start of a terrific performance by Colenso who would go on and score four tries.

A great kick into the corner from Niall Crouch got  Chard  in another  attacking position and Colenso had the simple job of touching down after the forwards had driven Penryn back over their own line. Crouch added the extras and Chard were pulling clear with the score now 17-7

Chard were now well on top and Ryan Helliar was winning lots of lineout ball as well as having a very good all round game.

Shortly before the interval another delightful break by Colenso gave Chard their fourth and bonus point try and Chard reached the break leading by 24-7 with Crouch having nailed the conversion.

Chard brought on Emile Szydelko for his first appearance for some time and he responded by scoring within minutes of coming on and with the conversion good Chard were out of sight at

31-7

Midway through the half Penryn were somewhat fortunate to get possession in the Chard half and made the most of it when Edson went over for an unconverted try.

31-12

Colenso got his fourth try with yet another superb bit of running but with the conversion hitting the up right Chard led by 36-12

A really good all round display by Chard with Matt Tinley especially worthy of mention. Defensible Chard were very good indeed and in attack always looked dangerous.

Just before the final whistle Penryn showed how quick  they were when given a penalty and  Chard were caught napping when their alert scrum half  Ethan Bloomfield crossed for a  try which was converted to make the final score 36-19      Chard 5pts Penryn 0pts

Wadebridge remain the runaway leaders of this division but only a few points separate Chard in  5th place and Newton Abbot in 2nd place.

Next Saturday Chard play away at Teignmouth  with the match kicking off at 3pm.

The match was sponsored by Knight Electrical and the club are very grateful to them and all their sponsors.

Cheddar Valley were unable to raise a team to play Chard seconds so conceded the game giving Chard the 5pts on offer.

The 2nd xv play at home on the main ground against Winscombe 2nd xv next Saturday with the game kicking off at 3pm. The team would appreciate as much support as possible as they need to keep winning to keep up their push for promotion. It should be a very good game.
